Song Sparrow Playgarden
A LifeWays® home program for children and their families.
In the fast-paced hustle of the SF Bay Area, Song Sparrow Playgarden strives to slow things down during the early childhood years. Days are structured with ample room for play and imagination, while also incorporating teacher lead activities, which include morning movement, painting, and participating in the caretaking of our space and our toys. Our hike days are full of play and exploration while we learn the importance of the caretaking of the land, instilling the principles of “Leave No Trace”.
We value reverence during meal times and in our household activities, such as washing dishes and setting the table for snack. We believe in teaching real life skills and guiding the children to become their true selves while fostering a love for learning.
Song Sparrow Playgarden is inspired by Waldorf Education which is based off of the work of Rudolf Steiner. He created a curriculum with a goal of teaching to the whole child. The focus in early childhood is on the development of the body; balance and coordination, hopping, jumping, climbing, running, fine and gross motor skills are all things we aim to do daily.
Relationships are equally as important at Song Sparrow Playgarden. We value the continuity of care and hope our families attend for a minimum of two years, preferably three. When Children are able to remain in a familiar environment with the same caregiver for several years in a row, they grow and blossom in so many ways.
Waldorf Education also encourages the adults to practice self-reflection and continued growth during their parenting journey. By continually looking at ourselves and how we can do better, we understand our children better. Each season, the parents come together with Teacher Amy for parent evenings. These evenings often include crafting, and always include insightful conversations in community with other SSPG parents.
The name Song Sparrow comes from a search for wildlife species living in Briones Regional Park. The property overlooks this magical place, and Teacher Amy has spent many mornings exploring and climbing in the groves of trees with her family. As a musician and a singer, Song Sparrow seemed fitting. What a beautiful song these birds have!
Since moving into her home in 2017, Teacher Amy has put her heart and soul into building a playgarden on this half an acre in Martinez; Creating a space for children to immerse themselves in play. She’s always working on things in the backyard to make it even more enjoyable. Chances are, each time you come over you’ll see something new.
The yard and playgarden looks nothing like this anymore, but it’s fun to see how far it’s come!
